I have always been inspired by trails, always been curious about where the next turn will take me. I have wanted to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail since I was ten years old and decided this is the year. My definition: to hike the Appalachian Trail in its entirety in one calendar year.

With 17,371 acres of wilderness, Dolly Sods is a beautiful and remote preserve within the Monongahela National Forest of West Virginia.
In 1943, the area was used for military training, and as per the park website, many of the ‘artillery and mortar shells shot into the area for practice still exist.’ The official trails were inspected and cleared, but it is recommended that you mark the location of these ordinances if you find one off trail and contact the park service.
We didn’t find any though- we just enjoyed our hike through the bogs, across rivers, through the woods, and open fields!

Fallen trees give back to the forest that raised them in many ways.
They provide shelter and habitat to small mammals,
a perch for birds, nutrients to fungi,
and they decompose to create the soil that helps
sustain the forest so that new trees can grow.
What an opportunity to practice Alpine Skills with Laurie and Simone!! A beautiful way to round out 2020.
